Home for the Holidays: 4 Things to Watch While Spending Time with Aging Loved Ones This Season

The holidays are a wonderful (and busy!) time of year! With family get-togethers and festive events filling our schedules, it’s important to take some time to observe how your aging parents are managing day-to-day. This period of togetherness provides a valuable opportunity to check in on their well-being and see if they might need extra help. Here are some key areas to pay attention to:

1. Taking Care of the Home:

  • Maintenance: Is the house generally tidy and well-kept, or are there signs that things are being neglected, like an overflowing mailbox or undone repairs?
  • Mealtimes: Are they preparing and eating regular meals, or does their refrigerator seem bare? Are there expired items or signs they’re having trouble with cooking?
  • Personal hygiene: Take note of their appearance. Are they bathing regularly and keeping up with their hygeine?

2. Managing Daily Tasks:

  • Mobility: Observe how easily they get around the house. Are they having difficulty with stairs, getting in and out of chairs, or walking?
  • Medications: Make sure they are managing their medications correctly. Are their medications organized, or are they scattered and potentially missed?
  • Cognitive abilities: Are they following conversations, remembering appointments, and managing their finances without problems? Are there any signs of confusion or forgetfulness?

3. Social and Emotional Well-being:

  • Social interaction: Are they engaging in conversations and participating in family activities? Or are they seeming more withdrawn than usual?
  • Mood: Be aware of any significant changes in their mood, such as increased sadness, anxiety, or irritability.
  • Hobbies and interests: Are they still pursuing hobbies and activities that they enjoy?

4. Safety:

  • Driving: If they are still driving, observe their driving habits. Are they confident and alert when behind the wheel?
  • Falls: Have they had any recent falls or near falls? Are they showing any signs of unsteadiness or difficulty with their balance?
  • Home safety: Are there any potential hazards in the home, such as clutter or loose rugs, that could increase their risk of falls?

Next Steps:

The holidays can be a time of joy and togetherness, but they can also highlight subtle signs that our aging parents might need some additional support. By being observant and proactive, you can help ensure they receive the care they need to live full and happy lives.
